What's been cooking in Korea?

Of course living in a different country results in learning/cooking up different recipes!  We have come a long way since our first few weeks here, when the only thing that looked familiar at the grocery store was a bag of hotdogs (we had been told how great the dog is here :)   Now, we can walk into the grocery store and not feel overwhelmed...usually!

I am going to try and post a new recipe at least once a month that I have discovered here in Korea.  Boy, do we miss American food, but it helps finding yummy new recipes!

Sushi Rice                                                   

3 cups of cooked rice cooled

1/3 cup rice vinegar

3 TBS sugar

1 tsp. salt

-Heat vinegar, sugar, and salt over low heat in sauce pan until sugar is dissolved.  Let cool.

-Add mixture to cooked rice, folding over and fanning. 

*Make sure to use a wooden spoon.  Metalic will react with the vinegar mixture

-Place a sheet of seaweed on a sushi rolling mat, evenly spread rice, and place your choice of filling in the center of the seaweed square and rice.  Gently roll the seaweed into a long cylinder.

 

With a VERY sharp knife cut the sushi roll, into even, bite size pieces.  Enjoy!

Cook up with some dumplings and you got yourself a great meal.  So far we have made Gimbap (Korean sushi with egg, ham, crab, radish, and our own special sauce)  and Tuna Gimbap (sushi with tuna and radish inside)...Delicious!
